Making sure your power tools are protected from any harsh elements that can damage them can take its toll sometimes. Every time you purchase a power tool it is always covered with a waxy and think coating to prevent the rust from eating up your power tools and this is known as cosmoline. And once you decide to use them , you strip them of it making them exposed to harsh elements. There are times that the woodworkers would just wash the cosmoline entirely without thinking of its future protection .

In order for us to protect the cast irons we need to coat them again to keep the moisture away . One of the less complicated thing that you can do is by purchasing commercial preventive sprays . Two common brands are Empire Top Saver and Boeshield T-9.These 2 products are used the same way, by spraying and rubbing it down all over the cast iron making sure to wipe off the excess, this can be repeated every now and then.

No matter how safely we keep our tools if these are kept without any protection it will still be eaten by rust. And if you leave it alone for a longer period of time it will definitely destroy it completely.

This jointer was left unprotected. You can already see the increase in sawdust that invites rust to settle. Give it 2 years more and this tool will need drastic care.

In the earlier days people still use a steel wool to remove rust but how about the dust that is settled where the wool can't reach . Fortunately, there are products available that can make this job a lot easier and more effective.

Using these products can be harmful, since rust removals are made of acids to remove the rust fast you should be able to use some protective clothing like goggles and gloves .
